Concrete Resurfacing in Rocklin, CA

Rocklin was built on granite: its quarries supplied stone for the State Capitol, more than 60 were opened, and the last closed in 2005. The city had 71,601 residents at the 2020 census and is mostly 1990s-and-newer subdivisions, many poured over shallow granitic and volcanic bedrock.

A Granite Town

Rocklin’s history is stone. Granite from its quarries went into the State Capitol, more than 60 quarries were opened, and the last one closed in 2005; the Capitol Quarry monument and Quarry Park mark that past in the Quarry District downtown. The city sits at about 249 feet on rolling foothill ground with granite outcrops, old quarry pits and oak woodland, and the stone that made it is still close under the yards.

Rock a Foot or Two Down

Soil survey units mapped here include Andregg coarse sandy loam, formed from granodiorite with soft bedrock about 74 centimetres down; the Caperton-Rock outcrop complex, on granodiorite and quartz diorite with bedrock about 46 centimetres down; and Exchequer and Inks soils on volcanic breccia and mudflow sediments, where bedrock is 28 to 46 centimetres, or roughly 11 to 18 inches, below the surface. Pockets of Alamo variant clay, with linear extensibility of 7.5%, and Fiddyment-Kaseberg hardpan soils fill in lower spots. Where rock is that shallow, excavating for a new base means breaking stone, so keeping a sound slab and resurfacing it is usually the cheaper route than tearing it out. The clay pockets are the exception: slabs there can move and should be checked for active cracks.

Stanford Ranch and Whitney Ranch Driveways

Most Rocklin homes are recent. ACS 2020–2024 data shows 26% built in the 1990s, 28% from 2000 to 2009 and 18% since 2010, with a median year of 1998 and about 68% owner-occupied. In Stanford Ranch, Whitney Ranch, Whitney Oaks and Sunset Whitney, original driveways and garage floors are now 20 to 30 years old: worn finish, stained garage slabs and the first open joints, rather than structural failure. Older houses are concentrated around the Quarry District.

Permits and Air District

Rocklin Public Works, at 4081 Alvis Court, issues encroachment permits through eTRAKiT for any work in the City right-of-way, on City-owned land or inside a City easement, so check before a driveway job reaches the sidewalk. Like Roseville, Rocklin is in the Placer County APCD; under its Rule 218, floor coatings for a garage are limited to 100 g/L, the same figure as in Sacramento County.

Rocklin Projects

The granite heritage makes stone-look decorative overlays a natural fit on entries and patios. Other common work is driveway resurfacing, garage floor coatings and pool deck resurfacing. South on I-80, Roseville has more valley clay and less rock.

Rocklin Concrete Questions

Who is responsible for the sidewalk in front of my Rocklin home?
Generally the property owner, under state law, although the City may treat damage from tree roots in the City right-of-way differently, so ask Public Works if a City tree is involved. If you or a contractor will work on that sidewalk, contact Rocklin Public Works for an encroachment permit: the City requires one for any work in its right-of-way, on City-owned land or within a City easement.
Does the rock under Rocklin affect concrete work?
Yes. The USDA soil survey maps much of Rocklin on shallow soils over granodiorite and volcanic bedrock, often within one and a half to two and a half feet of the surface, with rock outcrops in places. Digging out and re-pouring a slab is harder and costlier where rock is close to the surface, which is one reason resurfacing sound existing concrete is often the practical choice.
