Sacramento concrete resurfacing
A cement-based overlay bonded to the driveway you already have: the old surface is ground or pressure-cleaned, cracks and lifted joints are repaired, and a new wearing surface goes down in a broom, smooth or decorative finish. It suits a driveway that is stained, scaled or patchy but still structurally sound.
An overlay is only as strong as the concrete it is bonded to, so the first visit is a soundness check rather than a color conversation. Dragging a chain or tapping with a hammer across the drive finds delaminated areas by their hollow sound. Scaling that flakes away under a scraper, panels that rock when driven on, and edges crumbling where a car tire drops off the apron all get marked. Hollow or loose concrete is cut out and patched first; a panel that has heaved or dropped is corrected before any new surface is considered. If too much of the drive fails these tests, an overlay would just be a coat of paint on a problem, and replacement is the honest answer.
A pressure washer removes dirt, but it does not remove the hard, smooth top layer that a bond coat struggles to grip, and it does nothing for old sealer or oil that has soaked in. Driveways are usually diamond-ground or shot-blasted to a texture the industry calls a concrete surface profile (CSP), roughly the feel of medium sandpaper for a thin cementitious overlay. Oil spots under where cars have parked for years get a degreaser and sometimes a second grind, because oil left in the pores will lift an overlay in a patch the shape of an engine. Cracks are dealt with at this stage too, as described on our crack repair and sealing page.
The original control joints exist because the slab moves, and it will keep moving after it is resurfaced. On expansive clay such as the Galt clay mapped across much of Elk Grove, that seasonal swelling and shrinking is constant. A correctly built overlay honors every joint: the joint is taped or cut back through the new layer so it lines up exactly with the one beneath. Paving over a joint looks seamless for a season and then cracks in a straight line right above it.
A broom or light texture finish is the usual choice for a working driveway because it keeps traction for tires and shoes. That matters most on the steep drives common on the rocky hillsides of Folsom, where a smooth trowel finish can be slick when sprinklers hit it. A decorative pattern is possible on a drive, but only with a system rated for vehicle loads.
The air-district rules in this region set a 50 g/L limit for a category named “driveway sealer,” but that category is written for worn asphalt. A sealer applied over a concrete overlay is normally classed as a concrete or masonry sealer, limited to 100 g/L in the Sacramento, Placer and Yolo-Solano districts alike. The work on the public sidewalk and approach in front of a home is a separate question, and the rules differ by city; the Sacramento page covers the city’s owner-responsibility code.
How long does it take? Prep and repair usually take a day, the overlay another, and the drive needs a few days before it takes a car. Weather and the finish chosen move that timeline.
These often come up on the same property or the same visit:
Cracks routed and filled, joints re-caulked and the surface sealed - sometimes all a slab needs.
